We've all heard of the psychedelic properties of mushrooms. Psilocybin produces mind-altering effects when it's consumed, either alone or as part of a mushroom. Less well-known, though, are the medicinal properties of mushrooms. Depending on the mushroom, those effects can include stress reduction or improved cognition.

Mushrooms contain substances known as adaptogens, which can assist with internal hormonal regulatory processes. Just as ashwagandha can assist women with hormonally-induced stress, so can mushrooms help with self-regulation, leading to both psychological and physical benefits. Some even call mushrooms "nature's Adderall." The mechanism of action varies based on the mushroom but can include increased ATP production, immune system modulation, or stimulation of nerve growth factor production.

They're easy to use, as well. They can be purchased from the grocery store and then ground, steeped in hot water, or incorporated into food. They are often prepared in ways similar to Chinese herbs. Of course, using them properly and through a method that ensures good bioabsorption requires some study.

Mushroom-Specific Benefits

Lion's mane: improved cognition
Reishi: stress reduction
Cordyceps: boosts energy
Turkey tail: immune system strengthening

A simpler way to incorporate the benefits of medicinal mushrooms into your day-to-day routine is to use a mushroom elixir--a multi-mushroom liquid concentrate that, when mixed with water, tea, coffee, or incorporated into a smoothie--creates an instant healthy drink in just the right dose, one that is full bioavailable. Ananda Elixirs produces mushroom elixirs and is offered a 30% discount to Informed Dissent Media listeners who enter the code IDM at checkout. Each small bottle is highly concentrated and makes 30 drinks, a one-month supply.

If you'd rather pick and choose which mushrooms to use, based on a specific need, perhaps a mushroom concentrate powder would be more appropriate. If stress reduction is your priority, reishi concentrate is all you need. I've developed a mushroom treatment plan with specific mushrooms for specific needs.
