Would you like to feel good and think well? A high-powered study published in Nature with nearly 200,000 participants evaluated four "dietary subtypes" common in Western nations and found each had a profound effect on brain health.
Dietary Subtypes
starch-free
vegetarian
high protein low fiber
balanced
The results are striking, complex, and deserve a thorough read. I've summarized the highlights here.
The healthiest diet for the brain is a balanced diet. That means one that includes full grains, fruits and vegetables, and meat and dairy. Importantly, though, that does not include food stripped of its nutrients: white rice and bread, canned vegetables, and processed meat. It also does not include added sugar.
The vegetarian diet is unhealthy. Reinforcing previous findings, this study showed that a vegetarian diet is correlated with high rates of mental unwellness: depression, anxiety, self-harm, and psychosis. Presumably, a vegan diet simply amplifies this negative correlation. Multiple studies have shown vegan diets are associated with serious, chronic neurodegenerative disease, such as Alzheimers, ALS, and MS. As I've pointed out previously, the vegan diet is nothing more than a scam and a fraud.
Specific foods contribute to brain health.
Foods to Include
extra-virgin olive oil
fatty fish
spices
eggs
dairy (milk, cheese, yogurt)
legumes (beans, peas, lentils)
nuts
Specific foods damage the brain.
Foods to avoid
processed meat
sugar
refined grains (white rice and white bread)
By eating a balanced diet that focuses on the healthy foods and avoids the unhealthy ones, you can increase your odds of maintaining good cognitive function and mental health.
Of course, not everyone can or will maintain an optimal diet. For those who need a little help, I've put together a "brian health" supplement plan that incorporates the findings of the study here, as well as others.
Below is a link to my brain health supplement plan I provide my patients. I am now sharing it with my Dissident MD subscribers.
